On Principle Podcast

I produced and hosted four seasons of “On Principle,” a podcast for Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. Over more than 40 episodes, I interviewed business leaders who shared stories about “Oh, sh*t!” moments they encountered in their businesses. We explored how those situations arose, how they confronted them and what they learned. We also talked to Olin professors who generalized the lessons through their research or experience.

Here are some selected episodes from the body of work we called “On Principle.”

“The Longest Winter,” season 1, episode 1.

James Beard Award-winning St. Louis chef Gerard Craft recounts the moment he realized in February 2020 that everything was about to change — and what came next.

“The $5 Million Mistake,” season 2, episode 1.

A technology upgrade to the company Alaina Macia ran faced a critical turning point — and didn’t look like it would work. What happens when you’ve made a costly mistake? Where do you get the guts to face it—even if it means flushing millions down the drain?

“Supply Chain Crash Course,” season 3, episode 6.

Jimmy Sansone’s apparel company was about to lose an entire season of sales thanks to the collapse of the agent he used to manage his China-based supply chain. He had to learn how to adapt — and fast.

“War Zone: Rescuing a Colleague,” season 4, episode 4.

In early March 2022, the skies over Irpin, Ukraine, sizzled with Russian missiles and thundered with mortar shells. Under those skies in the first days of Russia’s aggression, the lead software developer for a Chicago-based startup huddled in his parent’s basement when the air raid sirens sounded.

The entire catalog of On Principle episodes is available on the WashU Olin Business School website — at least, for as long as they decide to host it.
